Excerpt:

The scent of blood got stronger, pulling my thoughts back and making my heart pound a little harder against my chest. Slipping a knife from the sheath inside my right boot, I watched the flutter of shadows on the path below where it turned and disappeared behind a thick wall of laurels. Slow breath in…Silent breath out…

Deeper shadows emerged and took shape — a man and a woman, both dressed for living outdoors and blending in. And there was Cooper, complacently allowing them to roughly pull him along between them, his nose and a cut on his cheek seeping blood. Weird. Cooper was built like an early twenty-first century Olympic gymnast and I’d seen him take out opponents in less than ten seconds without a single blow landing on him. How had they managed to subdue him?

I watched them come closer and pass below me. The woman on one side of Cooper was medium height with light skin and dark red hair that she’d pulled back into a short ponytail with a strip of leather. The man on the other side was tall and muscular with tanned skin, his bright red hair in a military cut.

I adjusted the soles of my logger boots against the branch under me to give myself a more solid launch, judged the distance — and jumped.

Author Interview:

-Thank you for stopping by We Love Kink! We’re so glad you decided to sit down and chat with us. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself in case the readers haven’t met you before?

– Please share some juicy details about your latest release.

If the entire series were one book, Savage Magic would be that midpoint where everything changes. A surprise enemy is back and an unexpected ally also comes to light. Moving forward, Addison and Cooper are going to have to put on their big girl panties (yup, even Cooper) if they’re going to come out on the winning side.

– What draws you to your genre?

I love the dystopian urban fantasy genre because it allows so much freedom. Books like mine can have action, romance, mystery, emotional depth and even funny moments. No getting bored in these worlds!

-When did you realize you were a writer?

Probably when I was six. We were asked to create a painting and then write a story about it and it was one of the few times I remember liking school.

-Where do you, as an author, draw the line on subject matter?

Because I write for the New Adult and Adult market, I haven’t really limited myself on subject matter. I write what the story demands, which is why the Shifty Magic series flirts on the edge of horror sometimes. I do minimize details in places though, not just to keep the books genre-focused, but also to keep the stories moving.

-What or who were your early influences?

The Hobbit, tons of romance authors, C.S. Lewis – I was all over the place. Movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark influenced me too. Good storytelling, both of them. Everything I read and everything I watch I’m analyzing and learning from. Can’t seem to help myself.

-How do you deal with writer’s block?

I have one of those anti-gravity chairs in my office and if I’m stuck because I’m tired, I’ll get in that and meditate or nap for 20 or 30 minutes. If I’m stuck because I’ve been sitting too long, I’ll get up and do some kind of physical chore like laundry, or I’ll take our dog for a walk. If I pose a question to myself like, “How can Addison get out of this?” or, “What would Cooper be feeling here?” and then let it go, I always get my answer.

-What is the best part of being a writer? What is the most difficult part?

It’s a magical thing to be a writer. All these people and places and events in my head go out as a book and other people feel and experience them as if they were there. It’s the coolest job I’ve ever had.

The only hard parts are the long hours at the computer and sometimes having to miss out on fun things in order to get a project finished. But it’s worth it.

-Who are a few of your favorite authors?

Ilona Andrews is always at the top of my list and so is Jim Butcher. I also really liked the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger. Great stuff.

-What are three things that many people don’t know about you?

I have two toy Minions in hula skirts on my desk. Whenever I look at them, it makes me smile.

I’m a tea hoarder. I used to tell my kids they were exaggerating about that, but no. Guilty as charged.

I’ve recently started using a program that lets me dictate my first drafts because I have so much trouble resisting editing when I need to be writing. It’s helped. A little. I probably should find a support group for obsessive wordsmithing.

-Thank you so much for stopping by and talking to us! It has been a lot of fun.
